"We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same."

(-- Carlos Castaneda)

"Forget your fears, and want no more.
At first light lay proud foundations.
Sense the greatness that before you unfolds.
Seek no more for hollow answers.
Answers that lay within you all along.
Farewell to dawns seen through saddened eyes.
Farewell to pasts to sorrows chained.
Forget your fears and want no more.
You will be strong and want no more.
You'll be adored. You will have everything.
You will be strong and want no more.
Forget your fears. You will have everything.
And want no more."

I'm always open to new friends, but take note: I am pro-choice, pretty radically liberal, religiously as eclectic as it gets, and polyamorous. My journal may contain discussions of medical issues, depression, anxiety, weird music, cultures and/or religions you may know nothing about or disagree with, and queer (LGBTQQIAA) experience/politics. I agree with a great deal of feminist philosophy, but I do not consider myself a feminist. I do not appreciate attempts to convert me to or shame me into adopting your diet of choice, your religion of choice, or your specific political causes, philosophies, or beliefs. If you're not okay with this and are incapable of having a calm, rational discussion possibly ending in an agreement to disagree, do not add me. I fully support your right to disagree, but the one thing I do not tolerate is intolerance, and you will be removed from my friends list.

If you've recently been added as my friend, I encourage you to check out the following links:

If you've been considering moving to Dreamwidth or simply creating an account there, but have been hesitant because you don't know people there, [livejournal.com profile] subluxate has created a friending meme on their DW account to help you out with that. You can add me over there at arclight.

Sidenote: I've never been able to get LJ to let me link to DW. If anyone could explain what the hell I'm doing wrong, I'd greatly appreciate it XD

After a few hours, a member of my own species found me. He left and returned with a group who carried me away. I wept like a child, not because I was overwhelmed at having survived, although I was. I was weeping because Richard Parker left me so... unceremoniously. It broke my heart.

You know, my father was right. Richard Parker never saw me as his friend. After all we'd been through, he didn't even look back. But I have to believe that there was more in his eyes than my own reflection staring back at me. I know I felt it - even if I can't prove it. I just wish...

You know, I've left so much behind. My family, the zoo, Anandi, India - I suppose in the end the whole of life becomes an act of letting go. But what always hurts the most is not taking the moment to say goodbye. I was never able to thank my father for all I learned from him, to tell him that without his lessons I would never have survived... And I know he's a tiger, but I wish I'd said: 'It's over. We've survived. Thank you for saving my life. I love you, Richard Parker. You will always be with me. May God be with you.'

I realize this is Sunday and a slow day for LJ, but I really think if we all pitch in and repost this, we can raise the $3,000-ish they need to fund this in the next 14 hours.

Drug Rape Prevention: DrinkSavvy Color Changing Drinkware

The problem is tha date rape drugs are odorless, colorless, and tasteless nce they’re in your drink.  We all know not to leave our drinks unattended, but the reality is it’s impossible to keep an eye on your drink all night
So what’s the solution?  With the help of Dr. John MacDonald, a
professor of chemistry at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and with the
help of Contract Researching Organizations, DrinkSavvy is developin
material that will immediately change color to warn you if a drug is slipped into your drink.

image

Great!  But it doesn’t stop there.  Together, DrinkSavvy will have the funding necessary to full develop the materia anddrinkware directly from this material, such as Plastic Straws and Stirrers, Plastic Party Cups an Glassware.

That mean discrete, 100% effortless, and continuous drink monitoring throughout the night, because the same drinkware that you are drinking with…is also the color changing material that makes invisible drugs visible.

While DrinkSavvy’s initial goal is to perfect our design to make our
products available online and free to select rape crisis centers,
DrinkSavvy’s ultimate goal is to use the success of this campaign to
convince bars, clubs, and colleges to make DrinkSavvy th new safety standard nd eventuall make drug-facilitated sexual assault a crime of the past

So please, back DrinkSavvy to be a part of something that will change
the world for the better.  Back DrinkSavvy to be a part of something
that has never been done before, and back DrinkSavvy to prevent someone
you care about from possibly being the victim of drug-facilitated sexual
assault. Thank you all so much in advance, and remember, when you’re
out drinking, drink smart, drink safe DrinkSavvy.

My fellow Americans! =D

One week from Tuesday we go to the polls to vote for President. By now I'm sure almost all of us know who they are going to cast their votes for. But it's important to remember that 36 states will also be voting on a total of 176 additional measures. I remember four years ago- my first presidential election- I was surprised and confused to find that I was voting on additional measures- not just for President- and I was totally unprepared. So I guessed. Guessing, I think we can agree, is not a particularly good strategy for a democracy, especially a first world democracy where so many of us have near-constant access to information.

So I'm asking you to do your research. This page lists all the measures that will be on the ballots on November 6th, divided by state. At the very least you should read the articles on each measure before you go to vote. These questions should not be new to you or take you by surprise when you arrive at your polling place. Know what you are voting on. Same sex marriage and marijuana legalization are just some of the many important subjects being voted on. Know if they're being voted on in your state, and understand what a yes vote or a no vote will mean.

To make this as easy as possible, I've compiled this handy list. All content is originally from Ballotopedia:

I know I'm preaching to the choir here. I know you all know that healthcare and healthcare reform are important. I know this article is disturbing and graphic. But nevertheless I would appreciate it if you would read it, and share it.

I am so fucking frustrated. I thought I was doing so much better at work, being so much more careful, but it turns out I'm not. I don't know what else to do. I'm not even being careless, because "careless" implies that I'm not treating my work with care, when in fact I'm doing everything I can think to do. I'm doing things in the order that I was told is least likely to lead to me making mistakes. I'm writing things out by hand before typing them. I'm trying my best to go back over and double check my work. What the fuck else can I do?

And no, I don't want to talk about it. That's why comments are disabled.

I know there has been a lot of conflicting news about whether Lennox, the dog in Belfast who was forcibly taken from his family due to his assumed breed, is still alive or whether he has been euthanized. For a time many thought that the battle had been lost and he had been killed, but he is still alive and his family is trying to push through one final appeal to have him sent to the United States where he has a new, safe home waiting for him. They are asking anyone who is willing to send an email (the text is provided- they want all emails to say the same thing) to the addresses provided at the last link below. The emails need to be sent TODAY- July 9, 2012. Please, let's all give Lennox one last shot at life.

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Arizona Sentate, Arizona State Legislature, Debbie Lesko.

----------------
Stop the Arizona birth control Bill

If this bill passes the senate then women of Arizona would be forced to provide documentation that birth control is for medical purposes only. The "company" would not be required to cover birth control if it was for prevention of conception. Additionally this bill would give companies the right to fire women if they discovered that she was using a contraceptive to prevent pregnancy

Here's their next move: The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA, would obliterate any semblance of online privacy in the United States.

And CISPA would provide a victory for content owners who were shell-shocked by the unprecedented outpouring of activism in opposition to SOPA and Internet censorship.

The House of Representatives is planning to take up CISPA later this month. Click here to ask your lawmakers to oppose it.

SOPA was pushed as a remedy to the supposed economic threat of online piracy -- but economic fear-mongering didn't quite do the trick.

So those concerned about copyright are engaging in sleight of hand, appending their legislation to a bill that most Americans will assume is about keeping them safe from bad guys.

This so-called cyber security bill aims to prevent theft of "government information" and "intellectual property" and could let ISPs block your access to websites -- or the whole Internet.

Don't let them push this back-door SOPA. Click here to demand that your lawmakers oppose CISPA.

CISPA also encourages companies to share information about you with the government and other corporations.

That data could then be used for just about anything -- from prosecuting crimes to ad placements.

And perhaps worst of all, CISPA supercedes all other online privacy protections.

Please click here to urge your lawmakers to oppose CISPA when it comes up for a vote this month.

Thanks for fighting for the Internet.

I don't know why this is the first time mention of CISPA has made it to my f-list, but I trust you all know what to do!

All that I see
Show me your ways
Teach me to meet my desires
with some grace

All that I fear
Don't turn away
And leave me to plead in this hole of a place...
'Cause what if I never break?
Estuary won't you take me
Far away
Far away

All that I seek
Please police me
I wan't you to police me
But keep it clean

Now that you mean.. my day
Now let's take them away
(that's why I hold you)
Strong as you've seen
Bold as you behave
(that's why I hold you)
You will always obey
(that's why I hold you)

All that I feel
Capital ways
Teach me to grieve and conspire
With my age

All that I can see
A gold mystic spree
A seeithing routine
I could never navigate
Maybe I like to stray

No harm it seems to be less so free...not today
It's like you want it that way

All that I see
Peaceful lives run away from me
Run away from me

We would like to take the sights
(that's why I hold you)
And bring silence in disguise
(that's why I hold you... dear)
We would like to meet the buyer that is on your life
That's why I hold you
That's why I hold you dear
That's why I hold you....

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

This is a total long shot, but... A long time ago one of the featured LJ communities was a comm whose main purpose was to post what topic you were interested in and people would comment with suggestions of (usually active) communities.

I've been through the featured communities as far back as I can get and I haven't been able to find it again. Do any of you happen to have any idea what I'm talking about??
arclight: (Storm wind)
If you've ever looked at my profile, you should recognize this. I want to update my LJ profile, but I still resonate with this so much, and I don't want to get rid of it. So I'm going to post it here as a manifesto or something.
